Mind your Manners
New to opera? Don't worry - you don't have to be an expert to enjoy it. There is no IQ prerequisite or status requirement. You don't have to dress or think or be a certain way to appreciate it. It is not remote or static, nor does it only apply to the experiences of some. It reflects both our universal and unique human experiences - rom our passions and conflicts to our ideals and sorrows.
As with any art form, however, a better understanding can enhance your entire experience. That's why we offer online synopses and recommended recordings, which you can purchase through the OperaSouth web site. Or, we invite you to come early to our performances for a brief pre-show explanation and encourage you to review our programs (free with your opera ticket) to inroduce the plot and the performers.
What Do I Wear? Nevermind the conventions of tuxedoes and ball gowns typically associated with "a night at the opera." Wear what makes you comfortable - be it a ball gown or a ball cap. After all, it's not what you wear or how you look that matters. Opera speaks for itself, and we want you to be comfortable enough to let it speak to you.
When Do I Applaud? Applaud whenever the performance so moves you!
If it's comical, laugh out loud. If it's sorrowful, let yourself cry. If it's stirring, be moved. If it's shocking, clutch your pearls. Whatever reaction the performance brings out in you, let yourself experience it - it's the only way to fully enjoy it.
How Do I Behave? Even though our singers are easily heard throughout the theater, audience noise and activity can be distracting to both our performers and your fellow audience members. As such, we ask that you remain silent and don't enter and exit during the performances. In other words, please refrain from talking and stay in your seat.
We also request that you turn off the sound on any and all electronic devices. And by "off," we mean off - we can still hear it if you put it on vibrate. Speaking of distracting, no flash photography, please.
We don't ask much - just that you enjoy the performance and let others around you enjoy it too.
